A good grounding and experience in caring for women experiencing a normal pregnancy and birth are important to be able to get the most out of the knowledge and skills you will gain in the advanced ALSO Part 2 – Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Course. You must have completed at least one year of clinical experience in maternity care to be eligible to attend an ALSO Part 2 – Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Course.
If you are still a midwifery or medical student, a PGY1 or PGY2 RMO or are yet to actively work in maternity care then you must complete the reparation in Maternity Safety (PIMS) Course first, and then the ALSO Part 2 – Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) course subsequently. |
The course benefits midwives, general practitioners, obstetricians and obstetric registrars (PGY3 and above), and others who provide maternity care. One of the great strengths of AIMS is its multidisciplinary nature – doctors and midwives learn together. We know that this network and socialising are key components in promoting collaboration, good communication and inter-professional trust required improve outcomes for women and their babies.

The ALSO course is run over two days with a mixture of lectures and hands-on sessions, using life-like mannequins and simulation to support learning. Mnemonics are used to prompt appropriate responses in emergency situations. The ratio of participants to instructors is usually 4:1. The course ends with a written and practical examination and a certificate is awarded if the examinations are passed. The course earns you professional ongoing education points from your professional college. The course is taught by both doctors and midwives from across Australia working in small, large, remote and larger teaching hospitals.
