Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS)

Course Calendar and Registration

The two-day course cost is $1,450.00 AU for all 2023 courses and $1,600.00 AU for all 2024 courses. A hard copy of the study manual is available for an additional $100.00, includes postage within Australia. Postage outside Australia is at an additional cost at the chargeable rate deemed by Australia Post.

 

Practitioners who are learning or are yet to actively work in maternity care, the ALSO – AIMS course may NOT BE FOR YOU. This includes PGY1, PGY2 and above, Medical, RMO & Midwifery students, and anyone who has not done any obstetrics. You must complete the PIMS course first, and then the AIMS Advanced course subsequently. You must have completed at least one year of dedicated obstetric training to be eligible to attend an ALSO – AIMS course.

Course Information

We run approximately 12 courses a year all over Australia.

 

Who should attend?

 

A good grounding and experience in caring for women experiencing a normal pregnancy and birth are important to be able to get the most out of the knowledge and skills you will gain in the advanced Part 2 – Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Course. You must have completed at least one year of clinical experience in maternity care to be eligible to attend an Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Part 2 Course.

 


If you are still a midwifery or medical student, a PGY1 or PGY2 RMO or are yet to actively work in maternity care then you must complete the Preparation in Maternity Safety (PIMS) Course first, and then enrol to attend Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) course subsequently.


 

Who benefits from the Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Course?

 

The course benefits midwives, general practitioners, obstetricians and obstetric registrars (PGY3 and above), and others who provide maternity care. One of the great strengths of AIMS is its inter-professional and multidisciplinary nature – doctors and midwives from varied backgrounds and levels learn together. We know that this network and socialising are key components in promoting collaboration, good communication and inter-professional trust required improve outcomes for women and their babies.

 

 

What are the Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Course objectives?

 

Participants who successfully complete the course will be able to:

  • Effectively recognise and care for women experiencing emergencies and unexpected situations during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period in an evidence-based and systematic manner.
  • Have a deep understanding of the complexities of childbearing and how to care for women experiencing such challenges
  • Recognise the value of multidisciplinary working in maternity care and engage in working together

 

The ultimate aim of the course is to contribute to improving outcomes for women and their babies.

 

What is the Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Part 2 Course like?

 

The AIMS course is run over two days with a mixture of lectures and hands-on sessions, using life-like mannequins and simulation to support learning. Mnemonics are used to prompt appropriate responses in emergency situations. The ratio of participants to instructors is usually 4:1. The course ends with a written and practical examination and a certificate is awarded if the examinations are passed. The course earns you professional ongoing education points from your professional college. The course is taught by both doctors and midwives from across Australia working in small, large, remote and larger teaching hospitals.

 

 

What does the Advancing in Maternity Safety (AIMS) Course cover?

 

The material covered by the course manual is updated regularly as new evidence-based practice information becomes available.
